Tourist opportunities
Natural and cultural attractions of the region are the main tourist potential, the territory also gives good opportunities for leisure time activities and tourist stays. Quiet scenic roads in the neighbourhood of Detvianska Huta, Budiná´s and Hriňová´s mountain settlements are very popular among auto and motor-tourists. A motor route Detva- Zánemecká-Hriňová is the one with most beautiful view in Slovakia.
There are more than 300km long marked cycle routes and a number of local paths to be used for discovering and exploring a colourful region via strengthened forest and field paths. In a hilly territory it is sometimes necessary to step into the pedals. The most significant marked route (green) is the 127km long circuit around Poľana with elevation 2400m and suitable for mountain bikes. The route is steep, recreational cyclists are recommended to plan 2-3 days for managing this cycle routes.
A network of market tourist pathways will run you through the peculiar villages under Poľana, hillocks around the Detvianska hollow and closer to the protected localities of the PLA Poľana. An education pathway Kaľamárka throws the old-time fortified settlement and archaeological excavations open to tourists.
The Kaľamárka rock walls are the one of the best training terrain for climbing in Slovakia. Horse-riding, teams of horses, fishing, winter centres suitable for beginners, middle-demanding skiers and cross-country skiers – those are further tourist attractions to be used. This offer is supplemented with possibility to visit more distant localities such as : reservoir Ružiná, thermally swimming pool Sliač and Kováčová, tourist railway and open-air forest museum in Čierny Balog, caves ....
The local actions and events are closely connected with folk customs, for example pulling up and pulling down maypole, Carole singers during Christmas. The carman´s competition of carthorses (January- Hriňova) and the biggest Slovak folklore festival Folklore feast below Poľana (July – Detva) are the most important events.
